Medical Errors/Adverse Events & Reporting
It is the duty of the entire team at McDonough Animal Hospital to always act with integrity and compassion. There will be some instances of medical errors, the bullet points below will assist in how to handle these instances. We should always be acting with the patient's best interest in mind, and that includes paying attention to detail in all aspects of their care.
ALWAYS report medical mistakes to a doctor. These types of mistakes include, but are not limited to, incorrect vaccine/medication administration, neglect of vaccine/medication/injection administration, overdose of medications, overdose of fluids.
If there is an adverse effect, get the attention of a doctor immediately to assess the situation and provide the appropriate care. This includes any problems that may arise before, during, and after anesthesia. Some adverse effects are EMERGENT and must be handled swiftly (patient cyanotic, not breathing)
If a patient is acting in a way that you feel is abnormal, always alert a doctor to their behavior so they may direct any differences in treatment.
