Parvo Appointments
Parvo appointments, or suspected parvo appointments, should always go into room 5. There are no electronics in that room and it's much easier to disinfect as a result.
When suspected parvo enters the exam room, an assistant should put a gown on (located in the isolation room) as well as gloves, and prepare a contagion litter box with a towel and a RESCUE dilution of 16:1 - 1 ounce of rescue to 16 ounces of water.
Place the contagion litter box next to a clean, dry towel on the floor in front of room 5, and step into that box and onto the dry towel each time you exit the exam room
Gather a history, get a temperature on the pet, and report to the doctor. Your gown should stay on for the entirety of the appointment - this gives less chance for contamination.
All tests and supplies used should sit on a puppy pad in treatment at the wet table. After the appointment, the puppy pad can be scooped up with all of the contents (excluding things like timers and stethoscopes) and thrown in a trash bag that is put in the dumpster. It is acceptable to throw away fecal loops, fecal float cups, slides, and gown/gloves along with the parvo test in this bag.
If the doctor orders a parvo test, bring the test into the room and conduct the sample collection, and set it up at the wet table in treatment on a puppy pad. Same with a fecal test.
FOR WEIGHT: Prepare the treatment scale with a puppy pad. Bring the animal out of the exam room and onto the treatment scale on top of the puppy pad. Note the weight and bring the pet straight back to the owner. Do not allow the pet to touch other surfaces besides the scale's puppy pad.
Follow instructions from the doctor.
At the end of the appointment, the room should be closed until it can be disinfected. Spray all surfaces with RESCUE and allow to air dry for 5 minutes - this means the surfaces should be wet for 5 minutes.
Prepare an outbreak mop bucket (dilution ratios on the back of the kennel door) and mop the entire room. Place the used mop head directly into the washing machine and wash as normal. Empty the mop bucket, rinse it out, and prepare a new bucket at normal dilution.
Assistants should not have enough contact with the shedding virus to warrant removing them from puppy or kitten rooms for the day. If your only interaction is using a parvo test and maybe administering fluids, you will be approved to go into any room for the remainder of the day. Speak with your doctor if you have concerns.
If the doctors elect to hospitalize the pet, they will instruct on their plan of action. They should be following the treatment chart below, directly from Elanco.
Clients should be presented with an estimate that includes the Parvo Monoclonal injection, which is safe for puppies ages 8 weeks and older. CPMA is administered IV at a dose of 0.2mL/kg given at the time of diagnosis.
If the pet is hospitalized, please take care to assign ONE person to the pet each day, and make sure that everyone knows which person that is (discuss at the huddle). The assigned person should not handle puppies for the duration of the day.
